Hemel-en-Aarde Wine Valley
Heaven on Earth

Literally translated as “Heaven on Earth”, the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley lives up to its name. Nestled between towering mountains and surrounded by rolling vineyards and pristine fynbos, this untouched corner of the Cape is one of South Africa’s most captivating wine regions. Protected from urbanisation and part of the globally recognised Cape Floral Kingdom, the valley’s beauty and biodiversity are as impressive as its wines.
In 2019, Hemel-en-Aarde made history by being named South Africa’s first UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy — the first on the African continent — cementing its reputation as a must-visit destination for food and wine lovers worldwide.
Hemel-en-Aarde Wine Valley Estates

With around 20 family-owned wineries, tastings are intimate, personal, and often hosted by the winemakers themselves.
What to expect

Hemel-en-Aarde is a region of remarkable contrasts: ancient soils, cool maritime breezes, and abundant winter rainfall all combine to create a unique terroir. Divided into three distinct appellations, the valley is recognised internationally as one of the Cape’s premier cool-climate wine regions. Here, vineyards thrive under ideal conditions for slow ripening, producing wines with elegance, balance, and a distinct sense of place.
The valley is particularly celebrated for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which have earned a place on the global stage. With around 20 family-owned wineries, tastings are intimate, personal, and often hosted by the winemakers themselves. Notably, one-third of these producers are WWF Conservation Champions, reflecting the valley’s deep commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Wine and Beyond
Wine is only part of the story here. Hemel-en-Aarde is also admired for its unspoiled natural beauty and close proximity to the coastal haven of Hermanus. Known as one of the best places in the world for whale watching, Hermanus welcomes Southern Right whales to its bay from July to November each year. Visitors can also explore the town’s beaches, galleries, markets, and vibrant cultural scene — making it the perfect complement to a wine valley visit.
This blend of land and sea, wine and wilderness, makes Hemel-en-Aarde an irresistible destination where every moment feels like a discovery.
Food Experiences
The valley’s culinary reputation rivals its wine. Restaurants and farm kitchens here embrace a farm-to-plate philosophy, celebrating the abundance of nearby free-range farms, artisanal cheesemakers, and seasonal produce. Creation Wines is a standout, with its innovative “Story of Creation” pairing menu that evolves with the seasons, offering guests a sensory journey through food and wine. Other estates, such as Newton Johnson, La Vierge, and Spookfontein, boast full restaurant offerings where you can linger over breakfasts, lunches, and panoramic views of vineyards and mountains.
For a more casual experience, Bosman Hermanus, Bouchard Finlayson, and Bartho Eksteen Wines offer tapas, platters, and picnic-style menus, perfect for relaxed afternoons with family or friends. Just a short drive away, Hermanus town presents a lively seaside dining scene. A highlight is Perlemoen Restaurant in the Old Harbour, where you can savour the region’s famed abalone while gazing out over the ocean.

Custom Wine Tours
With its world-class wines, celebrated gastronomy, breathtaking landscapes, and the nearby charm of Hermanus, Hemel-en-Aarde offers an experience that is truly greater than the sum of its parts.
