This private full-day tour through Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Paarl is designed around a simple idea — parents shouldn’t have to skip the Winelands because they’re travelling with children, and children shouldn’t have to spend the day waiting in the car. So we’ve built a tour where both sides of the family get their own version of a great day out.

While parents enjoy wine tastings and food pairings at three carefully chosen boutique estates, children take part in age-appropriate activities supervised by our qualified guides — from horse riding, farm visits and bicycle trails to strawberry picking, chocolate making, and Big Cat encounters at select estates. Every child also receives a Wine in the Cape lucky packet and their own “juice and sweets” tasting that mirrors the adult tastings.

The Family Friendly Wine Tour is priced per person on a tiered scale that reflects the private nature of the tour — the fixed costs of the vehicle, guide, and children’s activities are shared across the group, so the per-person rate decreases as the group grows.

All prices per person, all-inclusive of the items listed under What’s Included. Children pay the same rate as adults — this reflects the customised children’s programme (activities, dedicated guide supervision, juice tastings, lucky packets) rather than a discounted seat.

Franschhoek — Home to some of the most photogenic family-friendly wine estates in the Cape, with gardens, working farmyards and estate lunch venues that welcome children. Boschendal, Rickety Bridge, and Babylonstoren all feature on family itineraries.

Stellenbosch — South Africa’s oldest wine town has estates offering horse riding, bicycle trails, and open farmyards. Estates like Spier and Simonsig are known for their family facilities and welcoming atmosphere.

Paarl — The setting for the tour’s most adventurous options: Big Cat encounters at select estates, chocolate-making experiences at Spice Route Destination, and open estate gardens ideal for younger children to run in.

Farmyard visits — Sheep, chickens, alpacas, ponies, pigs. Estates like Boschendal have working farmyards designed for children to explore.

Bicycle trails — Estate cycling routes on gentle terrain, suitable for children who can already ride.

Strawberry picking — Seasonal (typically October to January) at strawberry farms integrated into the wine region.

Chocolate making — Hands-on chocolate workshops at Spice Route Destination in Paarl, appropriate for children from about 5 years old.

Big Cat encounters — Ethical wildlife encounters at select estates offering conservation-focused programmes.

Juice and sweets tastings — At every wine tasting stop, children get their own tasting flight of juices and treats that mirrors the adult experience.

Is lunch included? 

No — lunch is not in the base tour price. Your guide will recommend and book a family-friendly restaurant at one of the estates along the route, and lunch is paid for directly at the restaurant. Estate lunches typically range from R150 to R350 per child and R250 to R500 per adult.

Do children pay the same as adults? 

Yes. The tiered pricing is per person regardless of age. This reflects the customised children’s programme (activities, dedicated supervision, juice tastings, lucky packets) rather than a discounted child seat.

What days does the tour run? 

As a private tour, the Family Friendly Wine Tour operates any day of the week, subject to estate availability. We recommend booking at least 5–7 days in advance to allow us to curate the estates and activities around your children.

What time does the tour start and finish? 

Approximately 09:00 pickup and 17:30 drop-off, though the timing can flex slightly around your family’s routine — earlier or later starts are possible.

Is hotel pickup included? 

Yes. Hotel pickup and drop-off from central Cape Town and the immediate surrounding areas are included in the price. Guests staying further afield may have an additional transfer fee added.

Are child seats or booster seats provided? 

Yes, at no additional charge. Please let us know when booking so we can arrange appropriate seats for your children’s ages and weights.

How do you keep young children entertained during wine tastings? 

Every tasting stop is chosen for its family-friendly facilities — gardens, farmyards, dedicated children’s areas. Our guides supervise the children during adult tastings, running the juice and sweets tastings that mirror the wine experience so children feel included in the day.

Can grandparents join the tour? 

Absolutely. Multi-generational family bookings — grandparents, parents, and children — are a common configuration. The tour comfortably accommodates up to 7 guests, with dietary requirements, walking pace, and interests tailored to all ages.
