The inside track

The estate

High on the slopes of the Simonsberg, family-owned Tokara is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, estate-pressed olive oil, sculpture garden and sweeping views to False Bay and Table Mountain.

Tokara takes its name from the founders' children, Thomas and Kara, and planted its first Cabernet Sauvignon vines in 1996. The family-owned estate sits on the upper slopes of the Simonsberg above the Banghoek Valley, with views over Stellenbosch to False Bay and Table Mountain. Olive groves of Tuscan varieties grow alongside the vineyards.

Wine

Tokara focuses on Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc across three ranges. The Premium Collection blends fruit from several sites, the Reserve Collection comes from single vineyards, and the Director's Reserve wines are made from the estate's best parcels.

Dining

Tokara Restaurant, led by chef Carolize Coetzee, serves contemporary dishes built on local and farm produce. For something more casual, the Tokara Delicatessen offers a seasonal bistro menu, pizzas and coffee, with a children's playground and a shop stocked with the estate's olive oil.

Wine & Olive Oil Tasting

In the Wine Tasting Lounge, wine ambassadors guide guests through the three ranges. Tokara's cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil, made in a boutique mill beside the Delicatessen, can be tasted too. Booking is recommended.

Art & Gardens

Curated contemporary art fills the winery's gallery, and a sculpture garden leads to walks between the olive groves and vineyards.

Family Visits

The Delicatessen is child-friendly, with a playground beside the outdoor tables, making Tokara an easy stop with children.

Weddings & Functions

Tokara hosts weddings and functions with mountain and valley views. Contact Wine in the Cape for venue details and quotes.

We visited Tokara Wine Farm

·Reserve Tasting· Reserve Collection Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon

A seriously impressive, modern estate with an industrial edge. Walking in, you can see through to the cellar and its stainless steel tanks. Panoramic glass windows look out over vineyards rolling in every direction. There's beautiful art on the walls, two huge fireplaces sit side by side, and on a warm day the windows open to let the breeze through. Tokara is known for its Director's Reserve wines, its art collection and its olive oil.

Reserve Collection Elgin Sauvignon Blanc

Very mineral on the nose, with plenty of minerality on the palate too. It has a lovely, well-rounded structure and is a really lovely wine to drink.

Reserve Collection Chardonnay

A lovely, well-structured flavour profile with a fine, mouth-filling finish. Like the Sauvignon Blanc, it's a very delicious wine.

Reserve Collection Syrah

It's heavy on dark fruit from the first sip, but incredibly delicious. It's very well rounded with a beautifully smooth finish, a magnificent wine.

Reserve Collection Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon

Standout

Dark fruit comes through at the start, then it turns wonderfully soft and velvety. That smoothness comes from removing the pips before the skins are soaked in the juice. It's my personal favourite and worth the visit on its own.

Come for the Cabernet and the breathtaking views, and if you're visiting in winter, grab a seat by the fireplaces. It's easily one of my favourite wine estates in the Cape.
