Amperbo is a boutique family-run winery on the Bottelary Hills, specializing in unique cultivars like Tempranillo and sustainable, solar-powered winemaking.
Perched at 480 metres above sea level on the scenic slopes of the Bottelary Hills of the Stellenbosch Wine Region, Amperbo Wines lives up to its name — meaning “almost at the top” in Afrikaans. The estate is a labour of love, established by seasoned viticulturist Pieter Smit and his wife Michelle on the very land where Pieter was born and raised. Surrounded by undulating hills and expansive vineyard views, Amperbo embodies the dream of turning exceptional grapes into equally exceptional wines. With decades of expertise and a deep-rooted connection to the land, the Smit family has created a boutique label that is already making waves in South African wine circles.
Wine
Amperbo Wines is a small but powerful portfolio of handcrafted wines that reflect the passion, precision, and purpose of its creators. The range includes a distinctive Pinotage Tempranillo blend, which recently earned a gold medal at the Michelangelo Wine Awards, as well as a bold Bordeaux-style blend. Grapes are grown on-site, where the vineyards benefit from the high elevation, cool breezes, and well-drained soils of the Bottelary Hills. Previously, these same grapes were supplied to top-tier producers like Kanonkop, KWV, and Neil Ellis. Now, under the Amperbo label, the fruit is transformed into wines that strike a balance between power and finesse — a true expression of terroir and craftsmanship.

Amperbo does not currently offer a dining or tasting room facility, but wine lovers can enjoy their wines at home by ordering online. Located within easy reach of Stellenbosch and the greater Bottelary region, visitors can explore nearby farm restaurants and wine estates known for their excellent food and wine pairings.
