Overgaauw is a historic, family-run estate in Stellenbosch, recognized for its pioneering role in introducing Portuguese grape varieties to South Africa.
Nestled on the south-facing slopes of the Stellenbosch Kloof, Overgaauw Wine Estate enjoys a spectacular vantage point overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in False Bay. This historic estate, owned and operated by the Van Velden family for generations, is renowned for its pioneering contributions to the South African wine industry. Overgaauw was among the first Cape farms to mature red wines in small, new French oak barrels and made history by producing South Africa's first Bordeaux blend, Tria Corda, in 1979. Additionally, in the early 1980s, the estate became the first in the country to bottle a single-varietal Merlot, a groundbreaking move at the time. These achievements have cemented Overgaauw's reputation as a trailblazer in South African winemaking.
