The estate
In the Bottelary Hills with views to Cape Town, Mooiplaas pairs environmentally friendly wines with a 70-hectare private fynbos reserve and self-catering stays in a Cape Dutch manor house.
Mooiplaas dates back to 1806, and its Cape Dutch manor house is a national monument. Nicolaas Roos bought the farm in 1963, and today his sons run it: Tielman as viticulturist and Louis as winemaker. In 1995 the family set aside 70 hectares as a private nature reserve to protect endangered fynbos, earning the estate WWF Conservation Champion status.

About
Wine
The vineyards grow on steep, mineral-rich slopes in the Bottelary Hills, overlooking Cape Town. The Roos brothers make environmentally friendly wines by traditional, artisan methods, from Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc to Pinotage, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The tasting room is in a converted stable.

Tasting details
Mooiplaas produces elegant, characterful wines. Cellar master Louis Roos follows traditional methods including wild-yeast fermentation, minimal filtration, and ageing in small oak barrels. Grapes are grown using biodiversity principles. Viticulturist Tielman Roos has farmed the land since 1980, producing balanced, vibrant wines that reflect the estate's terroir. There is no formal restaurant, but the estate offers garden picnics overlooking the vineyards. Gourmet picnics and cheese platters are available to order.
