The inside track

The estate

One of Franschhoek’s most historic estates, La Motte pairs elegant, award-winning wines with restored 18th-century buildings, a wood-fired bakery and garden café, a mountain hiking trail and the seasonal JAN Franschhoek tasting menu.

La Motte’s history goes back to 1695. The farm took its name from a village in Provence after Huguenot settler Pierre Joubert bought it in 1709, and the first vines were planted in 1752. Dr Anton Rupert bought and restored the estate in 1970, and today his daughter Hanneli Rupert guides it. Four of its buildings are provincial monuments: the Manor House, the Jonkershuis, the Historic Cellar and a working water mill.

Wine

La Motte is known for classic, elegant wines that show clear varietal character. The range runs from the everyday La Famille Sauvignon Blanc, Vin de Joie Rosé and Millennium to Reserve Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Cap Classique. The top tier is the Pierneef Collection, named after the South African landscape artist, alongside the flagship Hanneli R. All La Motte wines are certified vegan.

Dining

The Artisanal Bakery & Garden Café bakes bread daily in a wood-fired oven and serves breakfast, brunch and lunch from 08:00 to 16:00. Seating is indoors or out in the gardens, among old oaks and lawns, with a farmyard-style playground for children. From September to April, JAN Franschhoek runs a seasonal tasting menu with wine pairing at a single 20-seat table in the Veepos, a historic cottage in the lavender fields. The experience is shaped by Michelin-starred chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen and cooked by Chef Lara van Heerden.

Tastings

Tastings are led by the estate’s wine ambassadors, in the historic cellar or outside overlooking the gardens. You can choose a Classic, Reserve, Pierneef or flagship flight, or book a seated varietal tasting in Riedel glasses in the Vinoteque. The tasting room is open daily from 09:00 to 17:00, and groups should book ahead.

The Ateljee

Continuing the family’s passion for art, the Ateljee is an exciting creative space for guests to engage with artworks, artists and makers. “Ateljee” is an Afrikaans word, derived from the French atelier, meaning studio or workshop, a space where artists, designers and makers bring their creativity to life. At La Motte, the Ateljee serves as both an exhibition space and a working studio, offering guests the opportunity to engage with art through curated workshops and seasonal exhibitions.

Sustainable Hiking

The Sustainable Hike is a further expression of La Motte’s commitment to the highest conservation and biodiversity standards and the protection of precious indigenous flora and fauna in the mountain area surrounding the estate and the adjoining Wemmershoek mountain range. The circular route, which starts at the La Motte Tasting Room, stretches over five kilometres, with the hiking trail section covering two kilometres. The time required to complete the trail is about two hours when walking and three hours when strolling.

Conferences & Celebrations

The Parshuis, set in the historic red-wine cellar, seats up to 100 guests for conferences, and the private Syrah Studio seats 20. Both suit birthdays, showers and other celebrations. Contact Wine in the Cape for details.
