Camberley Wines is a boutique, family-run estate in the Banghoek Valley, Stellenbosch, specializing in handcrafted, limited-production red wines and intimate tasting experiences.
Nestled on the slopes of Helshoogte beneath the majestic Groot Drakenstein Mountains in Stellenbosch, Camberley Wines is a charming, small winery overflowing with passion. With only five acres under the vine, Camberley produces a limited quantity of exceptional wines (around 1,000 cases annually), bottled in 500ml and 750ml sizes. Their dedication to quality and small-batch production shines through in every sip.
Wine
Initially a plum farm, Camberley transformed in 1990 when Gael & John Nel purchased the property. They promptly replaced the plums with vines, favouring Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grape varietals. Their first 1995 vintage was a small batch intended for close friends and family. The winery’s commercial debut came in 1996, marked by the unique decision to offer wines in 500ml bottles. While initially met with resistance from fellow winemakers, Camberley eventually adopted the standard 750ml format.
Production grew to around 2,000 cases, with a successful blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The winery later expanded by leasing neighbouring land, allowing them to plant Shiraz, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and additional Merlot vines. While the lease has expired, Camberley has embraced its return to “small producer” status, focusing on its signature Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend and potentially a small-scale single-varietal Merlot.
The heart of Camberley lies in its welcoming tasting room. Often described as a lively atmosphere, it attracts a friendly clientele, many of whom are friends of friends and repeat visitors from across the globe. Camberley proudly exports nearly half of its production to countries like Germany, the USA, the UK, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. Their latest offerings include a Sparkling Shiraz MCC and a unique pink MCC crafted using non-standard South African Port varietals.

While Camberley doesn’t have a full-fledged restaurant, it does offer light snacks for guests to enjoy alongside its wines.
