Wellington wine route & estates
Port, brandy & quiet character
Tucked at the foot of the Groenberg, Wellington is a quiet, characterful valley known for its fortified wines, brandy, and old-vine Chenin Blanc — a rewarding detour from the busier Paarl route.

The valley in detail
Wellington sits at the foot of the Groenberg, a short drive north of Paarl, and is one of the Winelands' quieter pleasures. This is fortified wine country — the valley produces some of the Cape's finest port-style wines and brandy, made from grapes that ripen fully in the warm, sheltered climate. Old-vine Chenin Blanc thrives here too, along with robust reds. The town has a frontier-history charm, and the estates are unfussy and welcoming. Wellington doesn't get the crowds of Stellenbosch or Franschhoek, which is exactly its appeal — you'll often have the tasting room to yourself, and the conversation with the winemaker is the experience.

Wellington wine route FAQ
The questions we hear most about planning a wine tour in Wellington.
Wellington has its own character — soils, climate and cellar style — which is why we build routes around regions rather than cramming them all into a day. Tell us what you love (bold reds, crisp whites, scenic picnics) and we'll match the Wellington estates that do it best.
