Spookfontein Cottages
Tucked into the vines. The valley to yourself.
Tucked into the vineyards and mountains of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Spookfontein's two self-catering cottages are among the loveliest places to stay in the area. Rustic and unhurried, with high reed ceilings, stone fireplaces and French doors that open straight onto the patio.
Both Blue Crane and Sunbird sleep four across two bedrooms, each with its own en-suite — ideal for two couples or a family. The open-plan living area brings together a well-equipped kitchen, a fireplace for winter evenings, and a seating area that spills out onto a veranda with some of the finest valley views you will find.

Why the road matters
A valley worth a few days
The valley is lined with wine estates, and they are a real pleasure to work your way along — there are far more than you would expect for one road, and you could easily fill two or three days without repeating yourself.
Creation is a short drive on, and their tasting-and-pairing menus are genuinely world-class — worth booking ahead. Hamilton Russell is close by too, with exceptionally knowledgeable tasting staff and the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that built the valley's reputation. Beyond those two, there is plenty more to discover between them, which is part of what makes staying out here rather than in Hermanus so worthwhile.
