A Legacy of Vision and Determination

The story of Maastricht Wine Estate began in 1982 when Johannes Louw, a young and ambitious 22-year-old, recognised the potential of the land and its soil. He purchased the farm, which now spans 280 hectares, with 171 hectares dedicated to vineyards. Today, the estate boasts a diverse range of varietals, including Sauvignon Blanc, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a small block of Pinot Noir.

In 2010, after years of producing high-quality grapes, the Louw family launched their own wine label. This decision marked the beginning of a new chapter, one that would see Maastricht wines receiving accolades in both national and international competitions. The family’s commitment to excellence continued with the arrival of Johannes’s son, Thys, in 2015. Armed with a business degree from the University of Stellenbosch and international experience from St. Emilion in Bordeaux and Napa Valley in California, Thys brought a fresh perspective to the winery.

A Rich History

The name “Maastricht” is steeped in history, dating back to 1702 when the farm was granted to Dutch settler Hendrick Seeger by the Dutch East India Company. The settlers, reminded of their hometown’s clay-rich soils, named the farm Maastricht. This historical connection adds a layer of depth to the estate’s story, enriching the experience for visitors.

A Unique Terroir

The strategic location of Maastricht, just 10 kilometres from the ocean, plays a crucial role in the vineyard’s success. The cool coastal breezes during hot summers help preserve the natural acidity of the grapes, a key factor in crafting exceptional wines. Additionally, the clay-rich soils surrounding the Tygerberg act as a water-retaining sponge during the cold, wet winters, ensuring optimal moisture levels for the vines.

The Winemaking Philosophy

Maastricht Estate’s winemaking philosophy is rooted in a deep respect for the land and a commitment to sustainability. The estate focuses on producing wines that truly reflect the character of the terroir, with a particular emphasis on Sauvignon Blanc, which makes up 70% of the harvest. The winemaking process, from harvest to bottling, is meticulously managed to ensure the highest quality.
