Winshaw Vineyards is a fourth-generation family estate in Lynedoch, Stellenbosch, offering unhurried wine tastings and a farm-to-table eatery.
Winshaw Vineyards is a story of adventure, pioneering spirit, and deep family heritage. It all began with Dr. William Charles Winshaw, a man whose extraordinary life journey led him from cowboy to Texas Ranger, gambler, and finally, winemaker in the Stellenbosch Valley. In 1925, he founded Stellenbosch Farmers Winery (SFW), laying the foundation for what would become a multi-generational legacy in South African winemaking. Together with his son, Bill Winshaw, they played a key role in establishing some of South Africa’s most iconic wine brands, including Château Libertas, Tassenberg, and Zonnebloem—names that continue to endure to this day. Now, the fourth generation of Winshaws carries forward this proud tradition, crafting wines from the very vineyards their father, the late John Winshaw, planted. Located on the southwestern slopes of Stellenbosch, near the Eerste River and just a stone’s throw from the ocean, the estate enjoys an ideal terroir for producing wines of depth, elegance, and distinction. But Winshaw Vineyards is more than just wine—it is a farm-to-table experience, offering responsibly raised grass-fed beef, pasture-raised eggs, and other carefully curated products that reflect the land’s heritage and sustainability. With a unique terroir shaped by the cooling Atlantic Ocean breeze, rich decomposed granite and shale soils, and naturally draining clay beds, Vriesenhof’s vineyards yield wines that capture the distinct character of each vintage. This constant dance between nature and climate ensures that no two years are the same—each bottle tells a new story of the land.

In late 2023, The Winshaw Wine Tasting & Eatery opened its doors, creating a welcoming space for guests to experience the best of the farm’s offerings. The concise yet carefully curated menu is built around the estate’s grass-fed beef, complemented by seasonal vegetarian alternatives. Guests can enjoy a leisurely lunch on the lush lawn, taking in the picturesque surroundings, or cosy up in the inviting indoor space during cooler months.
