The estate
Boekenhoutskloof is a historic, world-renowned wine estate in the Franschhoek Valley, celebrated for its pioneering Syrah and iconic 'The Chocolate Block' blend.
Established in 1776, Boekenhoutskloof Winery finds its place in the farthest reaches of the picturesque Franschhoek valley in Paarl. The name of the farm, "Boekenhoutskloof," translates to "ravine of the Boekenhout," with "Boekenhout" referring to an indigenous Cape Beech tree highly esteemed for its use in furniture crafting.
In 1993, the property and its homestead underwent acquisition and restoration. Concurrently, a comprehensive vineyard planting initiative was initiated, encompassing grape varietals such as Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon, and Viognier.
Wine
As a wine producer, Boekenhoutskloof Winery specializes in Syrah, and their premium Boekenhoutskloof line consistently experiences high demand, often selling out upon each new vintage release. Notably, The Chocolate Block, a blend predominantly based on Syrah grapes, has emerged as one of South Africa's most successful new wine offerings in the contemporary era.
Inspired by the adventurous pioneers who established a monument to their bold spirit, the Wolftrap brand offers a range of blended Rhone-style wines. On a global scale, the Porcupine Ridge series of delightful everyday wines has gained popularity, and is renowned for its excellent value and exceptional drinkability.
Dining
While Boekenhoutskloof offers an exceptional wine-tasting experience, it's important to note that there isn't a restaurant on the premises. However, for those looking to embark on a culinary journey, Paarl and its surrounding areas boast an array of dining options waiting to be explored. Paarl, with its rich culinary scene, is home to numerous restaurants, cafes, and eateries offering diverse cuisines and culinary experiences. Guests are encouraged to venture further afield to discover the vibrant dining scene and savour the flavours of the region.
