The inside track

The estate

Bellingham is a historic estate in the Franschhoek Valley, celebrated for its legacy of innovation and award-winning wines.

Bellingham Wines, nestled in the scenic Franschhoek Valley, carries a rich and inspiring history that began in 1693 when Gerrit Janz van Vuuren and his French Huguenot wife planted the first 100 vines on virgin soil. Originally named "Belle en Champ," meaning "Beautiful Fields" in French, the estate evolved over centuries into a beacon of innovation and tradition. In 1943, the dynamic duo Bernard and Fredagh Podlashuk purchased the farm, infusing it with their bold vision, creativity, and unyielding dedication. Today, the spirit of Bellingham is a celebration of heritage, resilience, and generosity, making it a cornerstone of South Africa's wine legacy.

Wine

Bellingham's philosophy centres on the belief that exceptional wines begin in the vineyard. The estate sources grapes from meticulously managed sites, ensuring the highest quality for every bottle. As a proud member of the Old Vine Project, Bellingham champions the preservation and recognition of South Africa's ancient vineyards, producing wines that reflect their rich heritage and unmatched depth.

The estate's winemaking approach emphasizes minimal intervention, subtle oak maturation, and a focus on mouthfeel, allowing the natural characteristics of each grape variety to shine. Bellingham offers three distinctive wine ranges:

  • The Founders Series — Celebrating the estate's origins.
  • The Bernard Series — Honoring Bernard Podlashuk's pioneering vision.
  • The Homestead Series — A tribute to Bellingham's vibrant history.

Dining

While Bellingham doesn't have its own restaurant, the nearby Franschhoek Valley is a foodie's paradise, with an abundance of dining establishments for travellers to enjoy.

Wine Tasting

Visitors can explore Bellingham's exquisite wines at the Franschhoek Cellar tasting room, conveniently located on Huguenot Road. The tasting experience allows guests to savour selections from all three wine ranges, each offering unique stories and flavour profiles. Knowledgeable staff guide visitors through the wines' origins, grape varietals, and craftsmanship, ensuring an engaging and educational journey. Whether it's a vintage from The Bernard Series or a vibrant blend from The Homestead Series, the tasting showcases Bellingham's dedication to excellence and innovation.
