Tulbagh wine route & estates
A hidden valley ringed by mountains
Tulbagh is a hidden valley ringed by mountains on three sides — a dramatically beautiful, lesser-known wine region producing elegant Méthode Cap Classique, Pinotage, and cool-climate whites.

The valley in detail
Tulbagh is one of the Cape's most dramatically beautiful wine regions — a long, narrow valley ringed by mountains on three sides, with the Winterhoek and Obiqua peaks rising sharply from the vineyards. The valley floor is sheltered and warm, but the altitude and the mountain shadows create pockets of cool climate that favour elegant Méthode Cap Classique, Pinotage, and finely structured whites. The town of Tulbagh is small and historically charming, with a row of Cape Dutch buildings on Church Street. After the 1969 earthquake, much of it was painstakingly restored. The wine route here is compact and intimate — you can visit several estates in a day and still feel like you've had the valley to yourself.

Tulbagh wine route FAQ
The questions we hear most about planning a wine tour in Tulbagh.
Tulbagh has its own character — soils, climate and cellar style — which is why we build routes around regions rather than cramming them all into a day. Tell us what you love (bold reds, crisp whites, scenic picnics) and we'll match the Tulbagh estates that do it best.
