Cape Wine Route
Elgin wine route & estates
Cool-climate heights & orchard country
High in the Elgin Valley, surrounded by apple orchards and cold mountain air, Elgin produces some of the Cape's most elegant cool-climate wines — bright, aromatic, and finely structured.

The valley in detail
Elgin is the Cape's cool-climate pocket — a high valley tucked into the Hottentots Holland mountains, surrounded by apple orchards and pine plantations. The altitude and cold night-time temperatures make this one of the slowest-ripening regions in the country, and the wines reflect it: bright, aromatic whites, finely structured Pinot Noir, and elegant Syrah with a peppery edge. The landscape is lush and green, a stark contrast to the sun-baked valleys further inland. Many of the estates here are small and serious about their craft. Come for the Riesling and Chardonnay, but stay for the drive — the pass into Elgin is one of the most scenic in the Cape.

Elgin wine route FAQ
The questions we hear most about planning a wine tour in Elgin.
Elgin has its own character — soils, climate and cellar style — which is why we build routes around regions rather than cramming them all into a day. Tell us what you love (bold reds, crisp whites, scenic picnics) and we'll match the Elgin estates that do it best.
