Just 18km outside the coastal town of Plettenberg Bay, in the cool, mist-kissed enclave of The Crags, lies That Wine Demesne – one of South Africa’s smallest wine estates, dedicated solely to producing exceptional Pinot Noir. With just one hectare under vine, the farm focuses on a still red Pinot Noir that reflects both the elegance of its cool-climate terroir and the meticulous care of its growers. Here, the combination of onshore sea breezes, stony clay soils, and the dedication of a small, hands-on team has produced a wine of remarkable complexity and character, earning multiple gold and double gold awards in prestigious competitions since its first vintage in 2016.

Wine

That Wine Demesne’s sole focus is Pinot Noir, widely considered the most challenging grape to grow yet the most rewarding to master. The Crags’ cool summers allow the grapes to ripen slowly without the stress of extreme heat, resulting in a fruit-forward wine with layered complexity and a refined structure in the new-world style. Since their tiny first harvest of 577 bottles in 2016, production has steadily increased, with award-winning vintages in 2018, 2020, and 2021, and continued recognition for quality in 2022. Dine

While That Wine Demesne does not have its own restaurant, guests can enjoy their Pinot Noir next door at the Beau de Jour Café at the Bramon Wine Estate Tasting Centre, or at the Bramon Restaurant itself. Both venues offer delicious dishes served in stunning vineyard settings, creating the perfect atmosphere to pair with a glass of That Wine’s award-winning Pinot Noir.

Tastings and Sales

Tastings of That Wine Demesne’s Pinot Noir are available exclusively at the Beau de Jour Café at Bramon Wine Estate Tasting Centre. Bottles can also be purchased at a select number of locations, including the restaurant at Bramon, Fynboshoek Restaurant in the Tsitsikamma, Luka Vineyards Café in Harkerville, Barrington’s, The Fat Fish, and The Table Restaurant in Plettenberg Bay, as well as Ice Dream Land on Airport Road near Plett (ask, as it may not be listed on the menu). These limited retail points reflect the boutique nature of the wine and ensure each bottle remains a rare find.

Stay at That Wine Demesne

The estate offers two self-catering, pet-friendly houses, perfect for guests wanting to stay amidst the peace of The Crags. That Place is a three-bedroom bohemian retreat complete with its own outdoor pool, indigenous forest surrounds, and a sauna for unwinding after a day of exploring.

Ons Hoek, its sister property, is a cosy, book-filled hideaway decorated with collected treasures and characterful touches. Both provide comfortable, private escapes within walking distance of Bramon Wine Estate and close to the many attractions of the area. From wildlife sanctuaries like Birds of Eden and Monkeyland to the pristine beaches of Keurboomstrand and Nature’s Valley, guests are spoilt for choice when it comes to adventure and relaxation.
