Spookfontein Wine Estate, situated in a captivating rural setting, invites visitors to indulge in a harmonious blend of exceptional wines, stunning landscapes, and unforgettable experiences.
Spookfontein Wines is a small wine estate in the gorgeous Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, just 15 minutes from Hermanus. The property, which dates back to 1847, is an indigenous fynbos paradise, with only 14 hectares under vine and olive trees growing quietly on the path to the spectacular hilltop cellar.
The term ‘Spook’ (Dutch for ‘ghost’) comes from the idea that a “spirit” can be found inside the swirls of the flowing farm spring. Perhaps it was the magical appeal of this farmland that drew the Davis family here two decades ago. Spookfontein is now an outstanding boutique wine farm thanks to the Davis family and the many brilliant hands that continue to work with them.
Spookfontein’s powerful wines are cultivated on rocky land and nurtured by Walker Bay’s timeless cool sea air. Wine enthusiasts can sit in the café overlooking stunning surroundings, stand at the tasting bar for a fuller experience, or relax in the cellar tasting room.
Douglas Carr of Ghostfountain Design created Spookfontein’s incredible cellar and new tasting/function area. It is made of natural materials and overlooks the upper half of the valley. Curved and thoughtfully planned, it does not intrude on nature but rather embraces it, with enormous windows providing visitors with breathtaking views of the vineyard, mountains, and farm life. Shop their wines here.
The Spookfontein restaurant overlooks a collection of towering Cape-fold mountains, surrounded by fynbos-clad slopes and manicured crops; a gastronomic paradise for food and wine connoisseurs. Locally sourced ingredients are transformed into delightful dishes that keep diners coming back for more.
Nestled in a captivating corner of the countryside, the estate beckons with a fusion of exceptional wines, breathtaking vistas, and immersive experiences.
Wine enthusiasts have the choice to enjoy wine tastings in various ways: they can opt to relish the wines while seated in the restaurant, which boasts captivating vistas; they can engage in a more interactive experience by standing at the tasting bar, or they can unwind within the confines of the cellar tasting room.
The remarkable cellar and recently unveiled tasting/function venue was conceived by Douglas Carr of Ghostfountain Design. Fashioned from natural materials, it surveys the elevated section of the valley. Characterized by its graceful curves and thoughtful design, it harmonizes with the surrounding environment, eschewing intrusion and embracing nature. Through expansive windows, visitors are treated to breathtaking views of vineyards, mountains, and the rhythms of farm life.
