By the early 18th century, Stellenbosch had become an essential agricultural hub, supplying food and wine to Cape Town and the many ships that passed around the Cape of Good Hope. Its early architecture, gabled homesteads and orderly town layout reflected Dutch influence, while its growing wine industry laid the foundation for what would become South Africa’s first official wine route.
Today, the echoes of its past remain deeply embedded in its culture, landscapes and world-renowned wines — especially its proudly South African cultivar, Pinotage, whose roots lie firmly in Stellenbosch’s historic soil.
