Nativo Wines is a pioneering organic wine estate nestled in the Swartland, just outside Malmesbury. Founded by Argentinian-born Billy Hughes and his late wife Penny in 2000, this family-run farm has become known for its forward-thinking approach to winemaking, its deep respect for the land, and its small-batch, character-driven wines.

Inspired by nature and rooted in sustainability, Nativo embodies the principles of Swartland Independent Producers (SIP) with every vintage. From the soil-built tasting room to the underground cellar constructed from repurposed materials, every aspect of Nativo reflects a commitment to natural living and minimal intervention.

Wine

Nativo Wines are certified organic in both the USA and Europe (NOP), and express a deep sense of place with each bottle. The range includes classic Swartland reds and whites, as well as experimental offerings like their signature skin-contact orange wine, Nativo Amarillo. The team vinifies each cultivar separately, using stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels, before blending and bottling once the wines reach their peak. No additives are used beyond minimal sulphur, staying true to their natural winemaking philosophy. Each wine tells the story of the land it came from, with elegant structure, purity of fruit, and a distinct Swartland identity.

Dine

Nativo Wines does not have a restaurant on-site. However, there are plenty of dining options in the Swartland Wine Region for guests to explore and enjoy.

Experiences at Nativo Wines

Visiting Nativo is a truly immersive experience that connects guests to both the land and the wine. Their farm visit tastings are hosted every second Saturday throughout the year (except during harvest season), offering a rare opportunity to explore the farm with founder and winemaker Billy Hughes. Guests are treated to a curated vineyard and cellar tour, barrel tastings of upcoming vintages, and a guided tasting of Nativo’s organic wine range, all in their beautifully designed rammed-earth tasting room. The experience concludes with a bespoke refreshment platter enjoyed against the backdrop of Swartland’s iconic landscape. Booking is essential for all visits.
