About Manley Wine Estate

Manley Wine Estate, located in the picturesque Tulbagh Valley of the Cape Winelands, is a boutique wine farm and private cellar offering a range of services. These include wine tastings and sales, a charming country-style bed and breakfast, as well as self-catering accommodations. Additionally, the estate provides conferencing facilities and a versatile function venue suitable for weddings and private gatherings.

Originally established in 1996 by the late David Manley Jordan, the estate was named after his middle name. Today, Manley Private Cellar stands as a registered, multi-award-winning wine estate.

In August 2020, Markus Ehehalt, a former Bosch engineer from Germany with a profound passion for wine and a deep affection for the Tulbagh region, acquired Manley Wine Estate and Private Cellar. Subsequently, Elias Kuhl Mihopulos, also a German engineer from Bosch, joined as a business partner following the acquisition.

Wine

Due to their farm’s shale soil, Manley experiences a slightly lower yield during harvest season compared to other cellars in the region. This results from the cultivation of smaller berries, which, however, have thicker skins and a higher concentration of flavour. The estate employs a meticulous three-fold sorting process: it commences in the vineyard, where underdeveloped bunches and berries are removed in the ‘green harvest.’ Subsequently, the harvested bunches undergo sorting, ensuring that only the best grapes are retained. Finally, a further round of sorting eliminates small, green berries and those with bird damage.

Harvesting typically takes place between February and April, with a focus on hand-pressing the berries to achieve a low yield per ton, ultimately ensuring the highest quality. Fermentation occurs in open tanks at temperatures ranging from 16 to 27 degrees Celsius, with four daily pump-overs. The estate’s wines mature in French oak barrels, and more recently, Swabian oak barrels, for a period of approximately 15 to 22 months.
