Nestled at the foot of the majestic Swartberg Mountains in the enchanting village of De Rust, Domein Doornkraal is a working farm and historic wine estate that tells a rich story of family tradition, countryside charm, and authentic Klein Karoo hospitality. The Le Roux family has been farming here since the late 1800s, cultivating vineyards alongside lucerne, pastures, and vegetable seed production. Wine

Wine has been at the centre of Doornkraal’s story for generations. Inspired by the rugged beauty of the region and its similarities to Portugal’s Douro Valley, Doornkraal has built a reputation for producing fortified wines of international standard. Today, under the stewardship of third-generation winemaker Piet le Roux, the estate crafts a variety of wines that are easy-drinking and rooted in the essence of the Klein Karoo.

The vineyards produce a selection of whites, including two Chenin Blanc styles, and reds such as Merlot, alongside a variety of dessert wines and the estate’s playful sparkling wine, Tinkled Pink. The wines embody Doornkraal’s core belief: that wine is a gift to be enjoyed, to enrich life, and to be shared in good company.

Food at Doornkraal is an extension of the estate’s generous spirit. Padstal

At the estate’s Padstal, located just 8km outside De Rust along Route 62, visitors can enjoy tastings from 20 different Klein Karoo wine producers – all available at cellar prices. This is the region’s only one-stop shop for boutique wines, offering a curated experience of what the Klein Karoo has to offer.

Alongside wine, the Padstal also stocks handmade farm products such as smoked salt, moskonfyt, quince cheese, wine vinegar, and a variety of chutneys, jams, and pastries. These products honour the legacy of “Tante Maria”, a beloved family figure whose recipes continue to shape the estate’s culinary offerings. Guests can also enjoy horse riding trails across the estate, with options ranging from one-hour rides to multi-day expeditions, and scenic walks or cycling along the rolling hills and footpaths that wind through the farm.

Wine Tasting

Wine tastings are offered on the farm and at the Padstal, where visitors can enjoy Doornkraal’s full range of wines in a relaxed, rustic setting. Whether you’re interested in the rich fortified wines or a refreshing glass of Tinkled Pink, each tasting is a chance to experience the warmth of the Le Roux family and the craftsmanship behind every bottle.

Venue

Doornkraal’s event venue, Tante Maria se Stal, is a lovingly restored stable with rustic charm and old-world character. Ideal for intimate weddings, special celebrations, or group gatherings, the venue offers a warm and welcoming space for any event of 10 guests or more. The setting, paired with the farm’s food and wine offerings, makes it a truly unforgettable experience.

Stay at Dormein Doornkraal

Guests seeking a deeper connection with the land and its people are invited to stay on the farm. The Doornkraal Kothuis is an Edwardian-style cottage set in the shade of a 100-year-old oak tree. It sleeps five and includes two charming suites with antique furnishings, a well-equipped kitchen, and a private stoep with sweeping views across the valley.

For a more intimate stay, Kerneelia Kothuis offers a romantic setting with mountain views, a queen bed (convertible to singles), a cosy living space, and thoughtful touches like fresh milk and a breakfast basket delivered each morning. Both cottages offer direct access to the farm’s natural surroundings and the full experience of authentic Klein Karoo farm life.
