Located just south of Malmesbury in the Swartland, City On A Hill is the personal winemaking project of André Bruyns—a passionate and thoughtful winemaker inspired by both his spiritual beliefs and the expressive potential of Swartland terroir. Named after the biblical passage “A city set on a hill cannot be hidden,” the label reflects both André’s personal vision and his desire to showcase the purity and power of the Swartland’s dryland vineyards.
City On A Hill focuses primarily on Chenin Blanc and Syrah, two varietals that thrive in the Swartland’s dry, rugged conditions and offer exceptional clarity, structure, and texture. The wines are made with minimal intervention using natural yeasts, seasoned oak barrels, and concrete fermentation vessels. André also creates multi-varietal blends, adding newer cultivars to enhance complexity and speak to the diversity of the Swartland. His wines are defined by elegance, restraint, and a deep respect for place.
There are no dining facilities at City On A Hill Estate. However, visitors to the Swartland region will find a variety of excellent restaurants and farm-style eateries nearby, offering local flavours and warm hospitality to complement their wine tasting experience.
Tastings and wine sales are available by appointment only and should be booked at least 48 hours in advance. This ensures a personalised experience, where guests can learn directly from André about the stories behind each wine and the vineyards that make them possible.
